Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss

Kiss. There are a lot of ways to capture a kiss, between two people – lovers, family, friends; two animals, or even just the sending or receiving of a kiss. I captured this kiss between two storks in Morocco. I felt lucky to have captured this moment.

This picture, of my boyfriend and me, was taken last May at a concert. We were drinking Heineken and Sam Adams, two of my favorite bands were playing. Kevin Devine and Say Anything. It was a wonderful, magical night. And we were very much in love.

In fact, we still are.

A plot of earth…

I couldn’t get behind today’s Daily Prompt, but yesterday’s really spoke to me. I spend a lot of time thinking about my ideal future, my dream home, etc.

Daily Prompt: A Plot of Earth

You’re given a plot of land and have the financial resources to do what you please. What’s the plan?

Ooooo, I shiver! Where even to start? Well, I suppose if you must start somewhere you start with a place to live.

My dream house is a large, but cozy, one story stone cottage. A bit like those sprawling Irish or English farmhouses. It would have a name, perhaps Ivy Cottage or something else suitably lovely, a large, bright kitchen, and several fireplaces to keep it warm in the winter. The entire house would be filled with books, in fact the entrance to each room would be through a hidden door behind a bookcase, the kind where you have to pull a certain book to trigger the mechanism that makes the bookcase swing open. The library would be in a two storied, round tower complete with a movable staircase.

A good deal of this land (who know how large this plot even is?) would be given over to rambling gardens and a working farm. There would be horses, chickens, goats, cows, bees! And vegetables! A kitchen garden for herbs, and an orchard for fruit and nut trees.

I would probably want three or four much smaller guest cottages on the land, that I could either have guests stay in or rent out, or even set up a a writer’s refuge.

Any remaining land would be left over to wilderness, set aside with provisions that would never allow it to be developed. It would be a sanctuary, and a retreat for myself and other artists that want a chance to get away from it all.

Yes, given a plot of earth I think I should do just that.

Far From Normal

I’m terribly terrible and keeping up with blogging commitments. Hence this post coming so long after I started this blog. I read today’s Daily Prompt from The Daily Post and decided it was a perfect post to use to jump back in.

Daily Prompt: Far From Normal

Many of us think of our lives as boringly normal, while others live the high life. Take a step back, and take a look at your life as an outsider might. Now, tell us at least six unique, exciting, or just plain odd things about yourself.

1. Last January I started writing for a local lifestyle magazine, Northwest Georgia Living. I now have a regular column featuring book reviews, Dog Eared, and a special section for book clubs called Members Only.

2. I’m particularly fond of nature and the outdoors. This year my boyfriend and I have decided to expand our backyard critter neighborhood by putting up a bat house, several birdhouses, an extra bird feeder, a new bird bath, and several toad and tree frog houses. This is in addition to my garden, which I’m getting ready to re-plant.

3. I’m still working at the bookstore, I’m the Children’s Lead. I do storytime and arts and crafts twice a week with the children. It’s a lot of fun and I’m very attached to the families that come.

4. Last year I read over a hundred books. No, seriously.

5. This year I started a new project to reinvent myself, I blog about it here.

6. I’m going back to school this summer to eventually major in Folklore.

There we are, six possibly interesting things about me.

The first inky fingered scribblings…

Hello All! Welcome to the evanescent, murky corners of my mind. I hope you enjoy your time wandering here. I enjoy creating worlds. Every person is a character, every character has a story. That story might be a fairy-tale, or an horror, or an adventure. Really it’s up to the person, the character, to decide where there tale will lead. Now me, I have no story, I am no character. I am a storyteller, therefor I am all characters and no character, in no story but in all stories.

But I digress. Let’s write this first blog about something that has been on my mind lately. Something very important and integral to any writer’s career. Possibly the most important thing any writer will ever have to know.

I’m speaking, or course, about commas. Commas, those nifty little things. They can impart so much meaning in writing. They can change the very meaning of a phrase entirely. Yes, commas are very important things. And I loathe them.

I hate them because they are so damned confusing. I seem to either use them too much or too little. Soooo I bought Eats, Shoots & Leaves. I figured it was about time for me to take a punctuation and grammatical refresher course anyway. Grammar next week! This week I will be trying to re-teach myself all of the proper punctuation that I used to so snobbishly flaunt. I also bought a new vocabulary book to add to my collection. That needs some re-vamping as well.

So in the interest of being a stellar freaking writer I will be brushing up on the basics. The building blocks, if you will, of the trade.

Expect to see more posts about that. Also I’m going to start participating in The WordPress Daily Post experiment. I figured this is a fitting blog for it. I don’t know that I will do it everyday but when one strikes my fancy I will.

#149 Life on other planets

Today’s topic over on The Daily Post is “Do you believe in life on other planets?” This is an interesting and highly debatable topic, so let’s proceed.

Yes. Frankly I do believe in life on other planets. How could I not? How could anyone not? Our galaxy is awesomely huge, the universe infinitely more so. Honestly it would just be arrogant to assume that Earth is the only planet in the entirety of existence that is capable of supporting life. And statistically improbable. You mean to tell me that in all of this:

There is nothing else out there alive? Really? Come on now.

Besides that, let’s raise for one moment another point. Some of you might remember the remarkable discovery that was made recently in the scientific community of an amoeba that was, it appeared, an arsenic based life-form. Now if you payed much attention in high school biology you will know that all of the organisms living on Earth are in fact carbon based life-forms. This, then, was a truly remarkable discovery. An arsenic based life-form? No way! Well, if you kept following the story then you know that no way was right. After further testing it was found that the amoeba in question had just built up a very high tolerance to the poison, but was not sustained by it. The initial findings did raise a lot of questions in the scientific community about the possibility of life-forms existing on other planets, even planets we had (until now) cast off as not having an atmosphere conductive to life. So even the argument that you would have to find a planet with “the right” atmosphere is now subject to questioning.

Now I’m not saying I believe that little green, gray, or reptilian men drop by for afternoon tea all the time. I’m also not saying that I disbelieve that. All I’m saying is that it is *possible* and even *probable* that somewhere in this big beautiful universe someone else has a beating heart or two.
